Nigerian Education Levels Explained: Primary, JSS, and SSS

Nigeria education system follows a 6-3-3-4 structure: six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary, three years of senior secondary, and four years of tertiary education. Primary School (Basic 1 through Basic 6) Primary school covers ages 6 to 12. The curriculum emphasizes breadth, exposing students to a wide range of subjects. Students encounter Mathematics, English, Basic Science, Social Studies, Creative Arts, Physical Health Education, Nigerian Languages, and Religious Studies. Primary school teachers often handle multiple subjects. Junior Secondary School (JSS1 through JSS3) Junior Secondary covers ages 12 to 15. This is a transitional level where the curriculum begins to specialize while maintaining breadth. Basic Science integrates Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. Content depth increases. Assessment becomes more formal. Senior Secondary School (SSS1 through SSS3) Senior Secondary covers ages 15 to 18. This is where specialization occurs. Four tracks emerge: Science, Commercial, Arts, and Technical. Students study fewer subjects but in greater depth. WAEC and NECO examinations at the end of SSS3 test curriculum-specific content.
