Why We Are Building Curriva for Nigerian Educators

Every week, Nigerian educators spend hours doing work that has nothing to do with teaching. They search for curriculum documents. They piece together lesson plans from memory and scattered references. They recreate schemes of work that should already exist in a usable format. This is not a technology problem. It is a curriculum infrastructure problem. And it is the reason we are building Curriva. The Problem We Started With When we began talking to Nigerian educators, one pattern came up again and again. Teachers do not lack knowledge or motivation. They lack access to the structured curriculum information they need to do their jobs efficiently. A teacher preparing a lesson on algebraic expressions for JSS2 needs to know the specific learning objectives for that topic. They need to know what prerequisite topics from JSS1 should have been covered. They need assessment questions that match the curriculum expectations. In theory, all of this exists in the NERDC curriculum documents. In practice, finding it means searching through physical textbooks, asking colleagues, or piecing together information from multiple unreliable online sources. This is what we call curriculum fragmentation. What Curriva Actually Does Curriva is not an AI that generates lesson plans from thin air. It is a system built around the actual structure of the Nigerian curriculum. When a teacher selects a topic in Curriva, the system knows what learning objectives apply. It knows what assessment formats are appropriate. It knows how that topic connects to prerequisite and follow-up topics. This is possible because we invested months in extracting and structuring the complete NERDC curriculum. Twenty-eight subjects. Three education levels. Thousands of topics. Each one mapped to learning objectives, content notes, activities, and assessment criteria. Why We Started With Research We could have built a product immediately. We chose not to. Instead, we are running a nationwide educator survey to understand how teachers actually work. This research shapes our product decisions. Who Curriva Is For Curriva is built for educators who create teaching resources: classroom teachers, heads of departments, school administrators, curriculum coordinators, and private tutors. It is not built for students as a learning platform. What Makes This Different Most tools start with content generation. They assume the teacher already knows what should be taught. Curriva starts with curriculum structure. It assumes the teacher needs to understand what should be taught before they can plan how to teach it. What Comes Next Our immediate focus is completing the research phase and publishing findings that benefit the entire Nigerian education community. The goal is not to replace teachers with technology. It is to remove the barriers that prevent teachers from doing their best work.
